Mary Mallon had used the fake name Mrs. Brown to keep cooking. Interesting name choice for a person who wasn’t washing her hands after going number two! Was it a twisted joke or a secret warning for those in the know? Whatever her thinking, denying the existence of germs, cooking for people when she shouldn’t, and endangering pregnant women and babies—it couldn’t get worse. She blew it. She was dirty and guilty. The authorities chased Mary again. They followed her to a friend’s house. Sergeant Coneally rang the doorbell, but no one answered. Coneally climbed a ladder to a second-floor window but was scared off by a barking bulldog. His next time up the ladder, he brought a hunk of meat to distract the dog, and then he found Mary hiding in the bathroom. Again. She was crouched down on the tile floor when he finally got the door open.
