Chapter Eight

Cliff sensed something was wrong before he even opened his eyes. A soft, warm, naked body lay curled against his side. He peeked at her under half closed lids. Catrina’s head rested on his shoulder, and her long dark hair flowed over his arm and down her back. A soft purr slipped through her lips, her warm breath washed across his bare chest.

Oh my God! What have I done?

Now what? Panic started to bubble in the pit of his stomach. There was only one thing he could do. He needed to get out of there before she woke up.

Making love to Cat had been a mistake. Yeah, he’d enjoyed every minute of it, but it never should have happened. After last night, she was bound to think they had a future together. He couldn’t live through another relationship. And even if he wanted to, which he didn’t, it could never happen.

Without a sound, he slid out from under the sleeping woman. Slipping the pillow under her head, she groaned and pulled it against her chest. The worn floorboards were cold against his feet as he slipped into his jeans. Grabbing a shirt from the chair, he snaked his arms into the sleeves. Reaching for the door, he shot a quick glance back to the bed and the amazing woman who lay curled around the disheveled blankets.

Too bad it could never be anything more than this.

A couple of hours later, Cliff ushered the last calf from the protection of its mother, while Rooster closed the gate. Puffs of steam escaped from beneath Cliff’s mustache, and he flipped his collar up against the early morning chill. His boots slipped on the muddy ground as he trudged to where Sonny stood tied to the rail. His mood was as gray and grim as the day ahead forecasted to be.

He could still taste the sweetness of Catrina on his lips, feel her curves pressed against him, see her eyes aflame with desire. He shook his head. What had he done? Each night she’d come to him in his dreams, and they made love. And each night the dreams became more vivid, more passionate. Then last night, in the midst of another dream, she’d materialized. And this morning, what he’d thought had been a beautiful, erotic dream had dissolved into a nightmare.

Reality had finally hit Cliff over the head, and like a reptile, he’d slithered out of the bed and slipped into the darkness. He’ll never know what would have happened if he’d stayed or what Catrina thought when she awoke. Cliff glanced at the house, his empty gut twisted. What did she think when she woke up alone?

She was far too independent, always running off and getting into trouble. He didn’t have time to keep an eye on her, much less keep her in line. One corner of his mouth cinched up in a lop-sided grin, and a warm feeling engulfed him. One thing he knew for sure, if he kept her around, she would drive him crazy all day and all night.
