Chapter XXIII

Cass stared up at him. Had Kate actually put two of the boys and the dog in Scott’s room? Cass could’ve killed her. Better yet, she’d throw Kate out of her own bed, move the kids and the freaking dog into it, and then change Scott’s sheets. This day was getting longer and longer . . . She tossed the blanket off. “I’ll get them out.”

“No,” he said, coming around to thump down in his corner of the couch, with his legs up on the L. “Who are they, Laurel’s kids?”

“Yeah, Laurel fell off the deep end. I can move them, I just have to—”

“Holy smokes, what happened?”

She gave him a brief rundown, expecting him to say, Whatever, but he kept nodding and asking questions. “And the dog is in my bed with the boys, because . . . ?”

Cass shook her head. “No idea. Honestly, I could kill Kate.”

He picked up the big blanket off the floor and tossed it over her, pulling the end of it down over himself as he curled his long body to fit onto the L of the couch. “Turn off the light.”

“Scotty, for godsake. I’ll get you a bed. If I’d known you’d be home, I never would’ve—”

“Stop. It’s fine. Just go to sleep.”

She turned off the light. In the dark there was a little snort of laughter. “What?” she said.

“It’s like some kind of halfway house. McGreavy’s Home for Lost Women and Dogs.”

She laughed; though it wasn’t exactly flattering, at the moment it was all too true.

The quiet descended again, and Cass lay there thinking this really was the most bizarre night. Crazy stuff had happened all the time when she was drinking. But it was always the same crazy stuff. This night had been one surprise after another.

* * *

THE back of the house faced east, which became abundantly clear when the rising sun glared through the windows and onto Cass’s face. She shaded her eyes with her hand and raised her head to peek down the couch at Scott. His eyes were open. “You snore,” he murmured.

“I do not.”

“You do. Like a bear.”

“You’re lying.”

“Check your teeth. They’re probably loose from all those snores barreling through.”

“Shut up!” She nudged his chest with her bare toe.

He grabbed her foot, grinning sleepily up at her. And she had the strange thought that it was nice, being close like this. She’d had so little physical contact in . . . how many months was it? Almost five. Since Ben.

Scott looked down at her foot in his hand, as if he wasn’t sure how it had gotten there, and let go of it. “I’m starving,” he said, rolling off the sectional. “I’m going out for bagels.” Still in his clothes from the night before, he put on shoes and went out to his car.

Cass got up. It was only six, and she hoped everyone would sleep for a while—everyone but Kate, whom she had a few choice words for. But first she had a job to do.
