Chapter Eight

“What the hell happened?”

Thane tried to keep his voice steady as he faced a leather armor-clad Deon in the antechamber of the council room. A messenger had slipped in to whisper to Thane that Deon needed to speak to him most urgently.

Urgent meant something to do with either Lea or Felin. Thane had curtly told his councilors, who ranged in age from a young man of twenty to a woman of a venerable ninety-two, that he’d return and followed the messenger out.

Deon knew better than to announce dire news at the top of his lungs in the crowded council hall, hence the messenger. Deon’s eyes betrayed his rage and worry as he related in a low voice that Lea and Emilie had disappeared.

Thane strode grimly from the antechamber down halls to a more private room, Deon moving swiftly and silently beside him.

“Disappeared how? How could they get past the twenty guards on every door?

How did they get past you? ”

No one got past Deon. The man could rise from a sound sleep and have his dagger to the throat of an intruder in the blink of an eye. Thane had not worried in the slightest leaving Lea in Deon’s care.

“I mean she disappeared. She and Emilie. One second there, the next gone. They just—dissolved.”

“Emilie was taken too?”

“Emilie took her. I think. Lea was fighting her and then poof, they were gone.”

“How is that possible?” Thane demanded. “No magic can do that.”

“How the hell should I know? I only know what I saw.”

Thane threw off the ornate velvet cloak he’d donned for the council meeting, finding the folds suddenly stifling. “The palace is being searched?”

“Even as we speak. And the grounds and the streets beyond and the whole damn city. No one has reported anything positive and no one saw them.”

“Gods damn Felin.” His heart hammered fast and hard. “If he hurts her…”

“You’re sure it was Felin?”

“Who else? And why was Emilie fighting her? How did Emilie get in to see her?”

“She’s not barred from your chamber. The guard let her pass, like he always does. I would have let her pass.”

“Where’s Balin?” Thane asked sharply.

The fact that the courtesans could betray him twisted like a knife. They’d proved their loyalty again and again, but the penalty for betrayal of the king—of the clan—was death. It comes to this—to save my kingdom, I have to kill my friends.

“Balin I found. My guards say he was wandering the halls and they arrested him.

He’s in the library. I thought you’d like to talk to him before we haul him off.”

Thane shot him a hard look, spun on his heel and left the room.

His heart pounded with fear and anger as he made for the library in the lower hall.

His beautiful palace suddenly seemed menacing, all those rooms and corridors and arched galleries that could hide Lea from him. His enemies had skulked among them and abducted Lea the first chance they got.

Disappeared, dissolved. It made no sense. No magic could do that—but maybe technology could.
