Chapter 6

Gavin had just finished giving a Labrador his yearly rabies vaccine and was walking out to the front desk with Ruffles and his owner. He saw Sylvia waiting there.

“Can I have a word?” she asked. “Should only take two to three minutes.”

“Sure.” He bet over to pat Ruffles head. “See you next year. Stay out of your Dad’s chrysanthemums.”

“If only he was better at listening,” the owner joked.

Gavin beckoned Sylvia into his office, and noticed she shut the door behind her.

“Would you be willing to help a shifter that has a… call it a ghost problem?” Sylvia asked.

“Josh.”

Sylvia made a grimace. “I didn’t give him a name. I swear. I only told him I knew a necromancer that might be willing.”

Gavin smiled a little. “He, on the other hand, handed me a bone, thinking that as a vet I could tell him what kind of an animal it was from.”

“Not an animal?” she speculated.

“No. And it shocked the hell out of me and I outed myself, big time.”

“How much did he tell you?”

“A lot. Does this mean he talked to you about his adventures in the house?” Gavin asked.

“Yes. My guess is it might be old Frederick Hess, or it might be someone he sacrificed to a guardian.”

Now it was Gavin’s turn to make a face. “Sacrificed to… I mean I know people have done stuff like that, especially in the past, but okay… really?”

“I don’t know. I grew up around here. There’ve always been some rumors that one or two families walked the dark path.”

“What about the guy who died relatively recently, um, Clayton?”

“I doubt it. I meant further back.. I think Clayton had some knowledge that he didn’t divulge, which might be why he never went ahead and sold the house years ago,” Sylvia said.

“I would like to pick your brains for more info. I just don’t have time right now.”

“This evening?”

“Maybe. Let me check with Josh and see what he thinks. And also, my house might be better than yours, but only so I don’t have to lug a batch of gear around.”

In the den of Gavin’s house, Josh set his backpack down beside the sofa. It contained both the bone in its little jar and the vintage book. “Are you sure you’re okay with doing this?”

Gavin was setting crystals in spots around the perimeter of the room. A pottery bowl on the coffee table held water. “It’ll work. I’m just taking precautions since you said what you encountered was aggressive.” He turned to face Josh. “I think I’m still a little surprised that you had such an in depth discussion with Sylvia.”

“I was seriously rattled. And she smelled trustworthy, not to mention she saw me change in your clinic.”

“Smelled? … That’s a criteria I guess I never would have … considered.”

“Meow.” Josh said, and grinned. There was a light knock on the door. “I’ll get it.” He came back in a moment with Sylvia following him.

“I brought extra hematite,” Sylvia said. “And cookies for later.” She held up a plastic container.
