CHAPTER 37

Bullies

Ashara watched Cass until she couldn’t see him anymore, then felt her daughter’s stare. “Stop it.”

“You look happier.” Tirah’s knowing smile brought heat to Ashara’s cheeks. As if understanding, Tirah changed the subject. “Have you shifted yet?”

“I have, once.” Ashara grimaced.

Tirah raised an eyebrow. “You didn’t enjoy it?”

“No, it’s not that. I shifted back completely naked.”

Tirah grinned. “Yeah, I’ve done that a time or two.”

Ashara blushed. “How, how do you make sure to shift back clothed?”

“Well, I have to picture what I was wearing before, and then I’m good,” Tirah said. “But despite that, it’s amazing, isn’t it?”

“It is. I felt so free,” Ashara agreed.

“Have you flown as well?”

Ashara bit her lip and shook her head. “No, not yet, I’m … a little scared.”

“Yeah, I get that. I was completely terrified.” Tirah grinned. “Of course, after I shifted, I then jumped off the ledge by Saber’s waterfall.”

“You did what?” Ashara stared at her daughter, horrified.

“It was so scary. I was falling so fast, I thought that was it. All these sharp, pointed crystal spires rising from the lake. I thought I was going to die.” She smiled as she remembered that night. “Then I heard Saber’s voice in my head. He told me what to do. Plus, I knew that if I didn’t go for help, he’d die.”

“I am really glad I wasn’t there,” Ashara said, knowing she’d have been terrified for her daughter.

“That’s probably a good thing,” Tirah agreed with a little laugh.

Ashara smiled, loving to hear the sound of her daughter so happy. But the sight of Shayaira walking by dimmed her happiness.

“Who is that?” Tirah asked, also catching the other females glare.

Ashara sighed. “Her name is Shayaira, and for some reason she hates me.”

“What? Why?”

Ashara covertly watched the clan leader’s daughter talk with another female. “I’m pretty sure she likes Cass and thinks he should be hers.”

“Oh, poor thing,” Tirah said.

“Why do you say that?” Ashara asked.

Tirah smirked. “Because Cass seems only interested in you.”

Ashara blushed, and was about to object, when she caught sight of Aries across the way. Training had just finished, and while most of the young in the group had wandered away, or taken to the air with their fathers, a small group was taunting Aries. “Oh no,” she said, getting to her feet to interject, when Aries turned, and with a look of complete rejection on his face, hurried away.

“Aries?” Ashara called, but he ignored her.

“They never change,” Tirah said, a pained look on her face.

Ashara’s heart ached for what Aries was going through, as well as what her daughter had suffered. “I need to go talk to him. Do you want to wait here or come with me?” she asked.

“I’ll come with you,” Tirah said. “Maybe I can talk to him as well.”
