Chapter 9

“Well, lookee here,” Honey Valentine said, coming up beside Cassie and pulling her back on the dance floor. “We done good with the likes of those gals, didn’t we?” She nodded to Nan, Penny, and Loretta, transformed by the alluring makeup and adorable sundresses, laughing nearby. “Come on, girl! Poor Doc Ferguson got the gout and he won’t budge out of his seat. He and Otis are gossiping like two old hens. So it’s your turn.”

Cassie let her tug her arm and followed close on the beauty salon owner’s four-inch orange high heels that matched her short, form-fitting dress. “How do you walk in those things, never mind dance?”

“Practice.” She giggled.

Without asking, Loretta, Penny, Stanley, and Harvey rushed over and began the dance moves to Boot Scoot Boogey with them. The catchy tune brought many to their feet and the crowded floor closed in on her.

Soon Cassie was pressed near Honey, Emilene, and Sandy. “We want the goods on Brody, sugar,” Honey said.

“Was the kiss good? My, it looked hot,” Sandy chimed in.

“What’s it like to tongue him?” Emilene asked, breathing heavy. From the dancing or the topic, Cassie couldn’t be certain.

Inwardly, she groaned. Would she ever live that kiss down?

“You can tell us,” Honey said. “We’re all old friends. Is he as good as he looks?”

She caught the twinkle in the other woman’s eyes. “Better,” she mouthed.

Honey squealed with delight. “I knew it. Knew you had more in you than stuffy ol’ business. Good for you!”

Her cheeks warmed in her already flushed face. But it felt wonderful to admit it, especially to someone who enjoyed life with every fiber of her being, someone who got excited for her.

“You go, girl!” She leaned close and whispered in her ear. “Don’t let those cobwebs collect, you hear? You go out and you take life by the balls!”

Cassie laughed, caught up in the excitement and happiness. After that dance with Brody holding her close, she felt like she was walking on air. How long had it been since she grabbed ahold of life and rode it hard? Never!

Coming out of a breakup with Carter, she’d retreated back to the ranch, where she faced Gran’s new proposition. What better way to get over heartache than to throw herself into a new venture?

How wrong she’d been. Because her heart wasn’t in this singles weekend concept. Who was she to try to match up pairs when she didn’t even know if she believed in that happily ever after stuff?

Maybe for someone else.

But not for her family.

Her grandparents bickered and separated. But no one would know it since they both lived on the ranch, spent most meals together, and continued with their age-old arguments.

And forget her folks. Too wrapped up in each other, they literally lost sight of everyone else. The cost of their foolhardy ways was the price she and her siblings paid for every day without them.

Cassie shook her head, trying to eradicate those painful thoughts from her mind and her heart.

The Callahans didn’t succeed in love.
