CHAPTER NINE

paul

I’m watching Candace toss and turn, her eyelids light as they flutter in and out of awareness. I’ve learned that this means Candace is mostly awake but desperately clinging on to the final remnants of sleep. She’ll be up any minute now, and I can hardly contain my enthusiasm. Before bed last night she gave me the heads up that she has an empty schedule today, and it’s my hope that we can make some progress on my body. Once I have a complete human form, I can go explore the world and do nice things for Candace. All morning, I’ve been dreaming of going to get matcha for Candace; it’s her favorite. Hopefully, within the next few days, I’ll have the ability to make that gesture a reality.

“Good morning!” I say the moment I see Candace’s eyes shoot open, no longer able to resist the light creeping in from the window.

Candace gives me a tired smile as she wipes the sleep from her eyes. “Morning, Paul.” She sits up and fluffs her pillows behind her as she crosses her legs underneath her. “It’s just you and me today,” Candace says. I already knew she’d have free time today, but Candace explains that Mary Lou and Ken Jr. are going away for the weekend to meet Ken Sr. at some conference he’s at in Florida. Candace continues telling me how this has been booked for months, and since no one was expecting Candace to lose her job and thereby be available on a Friday, the trip was planned without her.

“Fine by me,” I say once Candace finishes giving me the rundown. That explains why I heard a lot of noise around the house in the six o’clock hour this morning; Mary Lou and the younger Ken must have been leaving for the airport.

“Fine by me as well.” Candace stands from her bed and slides her slippers on. “We’ll have fun today.”

I rest on the dresser eagerly as Candace brushes her teeth and showers. When she returns to the bedroom, she’s wearing a delightful sundress with a subtle floral pattern and her damp hair is drying in loose waves. “You look beautiful.”

Candace blushes and narrows her eyes. “I don’t even have makeup on yet!”

“You don’t need makeup. You’re beautiful as is.”

The rosiness on Candace’s cheeks deepens. “You’re just saying that.”

“I’m not,” I insist. “Even as you were sleeping, with your hair sloppy and your mouth in various states of drooling and snoring—”

“Okay, okay,” Candace says, feigning sudden exasperation. “Don’t roast me.”

“All I’m saying is that you’re naturally beautiful. You should own it.”

Candace smiles in resignation. “Sure,” she says. “I guess.”

She says the last part under her breath but I don’t press the issue. Getting Candace to see what I see will be an uphill battle. Even still, it’s a challenge that I’m up for.

Candace crosses the room and grabs her wand from her nightstand before approaching me. “I think we should finish your body today.”

We have the whole house to ourselves and have no need to be silent or sneaky, so I’m in full agreement.
