Chapter Eleven

Stella prowled her new private sitting room. She pulled her new dressing gown tighter around her, wondering if she ought to have switched to her familiar, warmer robe. The pretty champagne silk was so soft and smooth against her skin, but it did nothing to keep her warm.

She’d dismissed Laurette, expecting Daniel at any moment. A quarter hour had passed with no sight of her new husband.

Husband. Stella took a breath, willing the butterflies in her stomach to still. She had a husband, and it was her wedding night.

She pushed away the thoughts of the night. Best not to think about what was to come.

The light of her candle caught the corner of a black walnut box. Stella sighed with relief and darted across the room, the candle’s flame dancing and sputtering with the movement.

Her lap desk sat on a table in a corner. Laurette, bless her, must have ensured that Stella had the lap desk close by. Her larger desk for drawing had been moved into the schoolroom upstairs until it could find a proper place in her new home, but the lap desk would suffice.

She opened the desk and pulled out a paper and pencil. Stella settled into her chair and tapped the pencil on her lips.

An image formed in her mind. She set the pencil to paper and sketched. Gradually, the shadows of people standing in the church pews lined either side of the image. Flowers lined the aisles. In the middle of the image stood Daniel, watching her approach down the aisle. Her cheeks warmed as she reflected on that heated look he gave her as he took her hand in his.

She set the paper aside, determined to create another just like it in colour. The pencil failed to catch the glow of the stained-glass windows in the church or that his colour of his waistcoat perfectly complimented her gown.

Picking up another sheet, she smoothed the surface and started to sketch the wedding breakfast. Stella was determined to capture as much as she could from the day.
