Never Send a Bitch

To Do a Man's Job

Chapter 11

Barely sedated, I laid in agony as two prison doctors worked diligently to stitch me back together. I was hit 33 times, including four stab wounds to my neck. The pain, although excruciating was a blessing in disguise. It was a constant reminder of how lucky I was to be alive. Night Owl had every opportunity to kill me, why he didn’t only he could say.

Later that evening I laid awake staring at the ceiling, reflecting over the past week that led to my assault. The warning signs were clear, why I failed to acknowledge the severity of the threat and implement better safeguards to protect myself was beyond my understanding. I wasn’t the type of man that left things up for chance, or underestimate a threat. I took nothing for granted, and relied heavily on my senses to avoid dangerous situations. The realization that my instincts failed me troubled me dearly.

In a feeble attempt to minimize their role in my assault, San Quentin officials instructed the hospital staff to treat me as a victim rather than a maximum security prisoner. The following morning shortly after breakfast I received the first in a long list of visitors.

“Floyd did I wake you?” An elder black man along with two female companions entered my room.

“No.” I replied and sat in an upright position.

“I’m Pastor Bernard Wilkins and this is my lovely wife Linda, and our beautiful daughter Trisha.”

“Sir, in all due respect I’m really not interested in hearing a church sermon. I think your time would be better spent tending to needs of other prisoners.”

“Son, we’re not here to hurt you. If allowed we’d like to help you. I believe through spiritual counseling you can learn the true power of love and forgiveness. Considering everything you have been through I understand why you may be reluctant to talk about love and forgiveness at this time, but believe me son you’ll be amazed how peaceful you’ll feel discovering the true essence of love and forgiveness.”

“Sir I appreciate your concerns, and I thank you for coming, but I must ask you to leave. It’s nothing personal; it’s just the way things are.”

“I must say in the twenty-five years I have been in ministry I can’t recall one time where I was asked to leave. Are you an atheist? Do you believe in God?”

“No I’m not an atheist, and yes I believe in God.” I replied, giving the man the answers he wanted.

“Well than what’s the problem?” He held out his hands in question.

“Under different circumstances I would love nothing more than to sit here and talk to you and your family. But being that things are what they are I’m afraid I can’t. The last things I need right now is for people to think I’m seeking spiritual salvation. A lot of people are watching and wondering how I’m going to emerge from this ordeal. I know my enemies are hoping they broke my spirits, and your presence here would seem to suggest that.
