Toby felt the kind of delirious joy that he’d only experienced in dreams. Flashes of what Jadyn had felt like under his hands made him smile as they walked along the forest path. His pants were so stiff with mud and water they had the consistency of a tarp, but he no longer cared.

"What's this flower?" he asked, pointing at a bright tower of red pointed petals interlocked together like some medieval weapon of war. The sun was nearing noon in the sky. It amazed him that they'd started out from the resort, safe and clean, only twenty four hours before. He imagined the frantic lawyers trying to get ahold of him, the frenzied search parties combing the forests for them, but realized the only person he was hoping wasn't too worried was his Gran. Would someone have told her that he was MIA from the resort?

"That's a heliconia caribaea, a balisier flower. No real herbal uses, but it looks nice." She leaned forward to get a closer look into the curved dips of the petals.

Toby froze, enchanted by the sight of her. Jadyn's hair was mussed with water and mud, like some kind of earth goddess emerging from the jungle floor.

"Just think, once we get out of this gods-forsaken jungle, we can have some fun in that huge Jacuzzi back in our room," Toby said. He didn't want any of this to end: her, this new peaceful detachment from the rush of his job, the exhilaration she made him feel.

"And here I didn't think you even noticed it was in the room." Jadyn playfully pushed at his side, her hands lingering against his skin.

He pulled her hips toward his, his hands reaching behind her to squeeze her ass. "Hardi-har. Even when I’m distracted, I still manage to notice the important stuff." He leaned in so his forehead rested against hers. "I always managed to notice you."

She playfully slapped at his hand, but she leaned against him for a precious moment that made Toby's chest feel light and full of fireworks at the same time.

She stiffened. "Did you hear something?"

Gods, what now? A second later, he heard it too. The birds around them had gone silent, the same stillness as before the storm, but this time the skies were clear. The crack of a branch snapping shattered the quiet, and Toby and Jadyn spun together toward the sound.

It was a jaguar, black as midnight and as deadly as lightning. It hadn't seen them yet; its eyes were focused on a darting rodent in the underbrush.

Toby and Jadyn exchanged a look. If they made a sound, the jaguar would see them. They were unarmed and helpless, and Toby was still recovering from snake poisoning, unable to shift. They wouldn’t stand a chance against a predator like that. Toby nodded toward the stream, inching backward. Jadyn followed, her footsteps light.

The jaguar remained perched on a high tree branch, a darker mass in the shadows, his tail lashing slowly as a hapless mouse eyed a berry in the underbrush.
