Chapter Twelve

Paige

I’m fairly certain that when the bells rang on the top of the church, I sat straight up in bed and screamed. Matthew pushed through the front door of my tiny apartment in the church and looked around as I pulled my sheets up over my body.

“What the hell are you doing?” I shouted.

“You were screaming.”

“Are you sitting at the door?”

“That’s my job,” he said with no remorse. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. It scared me and then you scared me. Get out!” I shouted, and he backed out of the door and closed it.

I fell back against my pillow and let the events from the past twenty-four hours stew in my mind. None of it made a hell of a lot of sense, and that was okay. Nothing had made sense since the people I trusted most told me I was some kind of angel and they weren’t my parents. But that didn’t bother me as much as the fact that Paul had disappeared before dinner and had never come for me as he’d promised.

Pressing my fingers to my eyes, I pushed back the tears that wanted to form. It was selfish of me to think he would come for me, or that I was special. This seemed to be an entire city of special people. Here I was just average.

I picked up my phone and checked the time. Theresa would come for me at seven. I needed to get ready for the day and eat some breakfast. As I climbed from my bed, I could hear organ music from the sanctuary. Seriously, I would need to get my own place. They couldn’t hold me captive in this church much longer, or I would lose my mind.
