The chamber was small and poorly lit, and the ventilation was awful. The situation wasn’t helped by the massive presence of Bron-Char. The man was built like a wall—even bigger and sturdier, maybe—and he alone seemed to take up half the dark blue quarters. The ceiling was low, and he had to crouch just to fit. He stood there, impassive, stroking his beard with his right hand.

“What do you make of all this?” Vers asked, pacing along the luminescent floor.

“I think,” Bron-Char said, slowly, “that you need to stop walking back and forth. I’m getting dizzy just watching you.”

Vers didn’t react, and she certainly didn’t stop pacing. “I just saw Yon-Rogg this morning, and he didn’t mention anything,” she said. “Something strange is going on.”

“Perhaps,” Bron-Char agreed, his back to one of the room’s featureless walls. “Strange can be good. It keeps things interesting.”

“You remember the last time things got ‘interesting’?” Vers asked.

The straight line that was Bron-Char’s mouth slowly turned upward into what appeared to be a slight smile. “Of course I do,” Bron-Char said. “But who knew it was going to bite?”

“Well, I did. Minn-Erva did. Att-Lass— Come to think of it, we all knew that the creature would bite.”

The smile on Bron-Char’s face grew a little larger, until it could almost be described as a grin. “You like being right, don’t you?”

“I like being alive,” Vers retorted.

“Let’s stay that way,” Yon-Rogg said as he entered through the door to the chamber. He didn’t appear hurried, but his demeanor was all business. At his side stood a tall man who appeared equally serious, maybe even more so. The second man greeted Bron-Char and Vers with identically sharp nods, punctual and exact, the way he did everything.

“Yon-Rogg,” Vers said, addressing the leader of Starforce. “Korath,” she added, recognizing the team’s second-in-command.

The door closed behind the two men. Yon-Rogg set a small tablet down on the table in the middle of the chamber. Without looking up, he said, “Where are Att-Lass and Minn-Erva?”

As if on cue, the door slid open and in walked Minn-Erva, followed a few seconds later by Att-Lass. The entire Starforce team had now been assembled.

“What’s the situation?” Minn-Erva said, her voice all business, but a bit edgier than usual. She looked at Vers, then at Yon-Rogg.

Yon-Rogg didn’t react one way or another to Minn-Erva’s tone. Swiftly, he pressed an index finger to the surface of the tablet. In the air directly above, a holographic diagram of the Kree sector of space appeared. Planets occupied or under Kree control were cast in a blue hue. “The Kree are at war. This is not news. We have been at war since before any of us were born. Since before any of our parents were born.” Yon-Rogg looked at Vers, and she met his eyes, then felt color come to her face and averted her gaze. She didn’t even know who her parents were, let alone where they were born.

With a swipe of his index finger, Yon-Rogg shifted the holographic diagram, until the planets it showed were now a luminescent green.
