Very few places remained uninhabited by the dominant Earth life. It seemed unreasonable that a species universally known for both invasion and scientific progress would be a threat to my kind that only prodded their world, collecting their dead skin particles and various fauna, and yet they were. Certain biomes were so densely populated that it was only places like Gretta Lorraine's park, long unattended, that remained empty enough for our forage.

Hello, she said. I did not expect to see you here again.

Among the biological elements, many nonbiological sitting areas were left unused, and waste littered the floor. Nonbiodegradable components washed in with the rain and wind from uphill and gathered around Gretta Lorraine. I could not clear them away.

"I am to gather more readings," I told her. I took her ankle in my feeble, dispersing hold. "If I am permitted."

Her gaze pressed down on me, flattened me, a warning of sorts, to not overstep some unpresented boundary. She was enormous; I was small and felt it.
