CHAPTER ELEVEN

Peaches exited the highway in Houston, then pulled up to the stoplight. Glancing at her phone, she said, “It’s lunchtime . . . what do you want to eat?”

Jamie shrugged. “I’m not really sure—I haven’t been to Houston in years.”

She let her eyes move slowly over Jamie’s shapely body, clad in black leggings, a sleeveless yellow tunic, and black-and-white Vans sneakers. No matter how casually she dresses, she’s still a knockout.

A horn honked behind her, shifting her focus back to traffic. The light had changed, so she made a right onto Scott Street. “I have a cousin who lived here for a few years before going back up to Lubbock, and he used to rave about this one chicken place. I’m pretty sure it’s still open.” Taking in the surrounding scenery, she spotted the yellow sign with the white script lettering. “There it is. French’s fried chicken.”

“Okay, I’m game.”

Peaches pulled off the road into the small parking lot. The building housing the restaurant was a small one-story structure. It was an old-fashioned counter-service eatery, though it did have a covered, fenced-in area in front of it with picnic tables for dining.

Shutting off the engine, Peaches glanced at Jamie, whose eyes were glued to her phone. “What are you doing?”

“Looking at the menu . . . can you get me the three-tenders meal with a sweet tea, the special sauce, and a praline?”

She chuckled. “You’re not getting out?”

Jamie shook her head. “Nah. If I stand up now, I’m gonna have to pee, so I’ll wait until we get to campus.”

Chuckling, Peaches got out of the truck. “I’ll be right back.”

Entering the fenced area, she got in line behind the three other people already there and waited her turn. At the window, she ordered Jamie what she’d asked for and then got what she wanted. After hanging back at one of the picnic tables until the food was ready, she then ferried the two paper bags and the cardboard carrier with two foam cups back to the truck.

“That smells amazing,” Jamie commented as Peaches handed over her bag and drink.

“Have you ever eaten here before?”

Jamie nodded. “Yeah, but it was a long time ago . . . I think I was in high school.” She reached into her bag and grabbed the straw. As she unwrapped it and jabbed it into her cup, she asked, “What did you get?”

“A spicy sausage meal. Oh, and I got myself a praline too. I’ve never eaten here before, but my cousin Greg raves about it.”

They ate in friendly silence, and Peaches discovered that the food was just as good as her cousin insisted. It definitely falls squarely in the comfort-food category . . . no way could I eat like this every day.

Once they’d finished, Jamie said, “We’ve still got a little time to kill before I meet Tashaun at the student center. There’s an art museum on campus, though, and I’d really like to take a look at that before my tour.”

“Sounds interesting. Let’s go check it out.
