Chapter 10

Ava followed Noah out of the tea shop and saw that just down the street was the Books in the Woods. She pointed, and Noah nodded.

The day was warming up, and icicles dripped from the eaves of the stores. They made beautiful prisms as the sunlight hit them and shone rainbows as they walked along the sidewalk. Ava felt a joy in life that had been missing.

“Here we go.” Noah opened the door for her.

Once inside, the wonderful smell of books greeted her. For a small town, the store was quite large and full of sections for mysteries, romance, westerns, and literature. Ava wasn’t sure what she was in the mood for.

She loved historical romance, especially about the American West, but mysteries were her favorites.

Noah pointed to the Western Section. “I’ll meet you at those comfy chairs by the fire, and we can talk books.”

“All right. It won’t take me long to find something.” Ava grabbed a mystery, a cute romance, and a historical romance set in the west. A pioneer saga of a mail-order bride on a wagon train.

She found Noah already settled in and reading a Louis L’Amour western. “I see you are reading the life you love.”

He grinned. “I’ve got most of his books. This one I haven’t read yet. Have you read any of his books?”

“Yes, my father is a fan, and I’ve read some of his.”

“And you don’t like them?”

“I do.” She held up the book about the wagon train. “I prefer historical romances. They are more on the relationships of people rather than the shooting part of a western.”

“Ah, I see.” He closed his book and looked at her as if he were studying her. “You’re a bit of a puzzle to me, too. I’m sorry we haven’t gotten along from the start.”

“Me, too. For all my modern ways, I, too, fall into the horrid trap of stereotyping others. I am a counselor and should know better.”

Noah smiled. “I’ve found it best to let people explain themselves to me. After all, I give that notion to a horse I want to break. Some are simply scared of anything that moves. Others are smart and look for a way to escape, and then there are the special ones that connect. They make the best workhorses.”

Ava grinned. “I don’t think I’ve ever been compared to horses before.”

He laughed. “Well, they are social animals and made by the same creator.”

“And what type of horse do you make me out to be?”

“You? Let me see. A pretty palomino with a mind of her own. I wouldn’t treat her rough, but gentle and get to know her. Let her know she could trust me so we could work together.”

Ava nodded. “Sounds reasonable.”

“And what does the counselor see in me?”

“Oh, dear, I hate to mix work with pleasure.” She grinned. “But I’ll play. You’re a hard one to figure. I think you’re a risk-taker, yet you’ve played your hand in life carefully. Content to be an adventurer for a billionaire that you’ve never met in person.
