“An experimental antidote?” you ask. “I don’t know if that’s a good idea. Does it matter that I was bitten almost five hours ago?”

“Five hours? Well, we’ve only tested recently affected people so far. Within the first hour or two.”

It sounds awfully risky. You turn down the offer. Dr. Bachmann looks disappointed and angry, but he respects your decision. “Then we need to do what we can to slow down the zombification process.”

Two soldiers wheel a gurney and medical equipment through the tent flaps. You switch into a hospital gown and lie down. A woman in a lab coat puts an IV in your arm.

“We’re going to sedate you,” she explains. “Your body will slow down and buy us some time.”

Before long, your eyes grow heavy, and you fall asleep.

Your parents are the first thing you see when you open your eyes. Tears flow down their faces.

“How do you feel?” your mom asks.

You smack your lips. Your mouth is incredibly dry. “My hand hurts, but I feel OK. How long have I been out?”

Dr. Bachmann appears on the other side of the gurney. “Three days,” he says. “I’m glad to hear you’re doing well. The soreness in your hand will last a few days, but you’re extremely lucky. We tested the original antidote on another bite victim with a similar infection timeline. He experienced some rather disturbing side effects. Our scientists tweaked the antidote, and your parents agreed to test it on you.”

“And it worked,” finished your dad, a huge smile on his face. “They’ve set up a place for us to stay while they monitor you.”

You can’t believe you were bitten by a zombie and survived. You hope they can distribute the antidote fast enough to stop the zombie outbreak.
