A mix of plastic films, not recyclable

Paper and aluminum foil: Recycle the paper if it’s completely free of candy. Tiny foil won’t end up being sorted correctly on its own, but ball it in with other foils if you have them.

Same as with the other foils

Aerosol cans themselves can be recycled and they are currently widely accepted, but it’s what’s inside them that is the problem. The cans are pressurized with a propellant that when released from the can atomizes the product and produces a spray. The contents of aerosol cans should be emptied before the can is recycled. When aerosol cans are still filled and are thrown away into the trash, they often explode as the trash gets compacted. This potentially creates extremely dangerous working conditions for your local recycling and sanitation workers.

HOW TO RECYCLE AN AEROSOL CAN

1. Is what’s in the can hazardous? Bring it to a household hazardous-waste drop-off program if it contained acutely toxic contents (pesticides, herbicides, or highly toxic solvents).

2. Check to see whether your jurisdiction accepts aerosol cans.

3. Check to see if the can is empty. If you shake the can and hear the liquid inside, spray until nothing comes out.

4. Leave the cap off the aerosol can and place the cap in your recycling bin, if your jurisdiction accepts it.
