Theo gave herself a few moments to lean against the wall and think about that swirling room. About how Alexander had gone in himself and had come out someone else.
She wasnât afraid anymore. She was mad. Really, really mad. She loved Alexander. Sure, sometimes he was frustrating, and sometimes she wondered how they were twins when they were so different. But he was her Alexander, and no one else got to decide to change him.
Theo stomped down the path, wishing her bees were real and she could send them ahead of herself like a buzzing, swarming army, ready to deliver stinging revenge. She meant to march straight to the cabin and find Alexander, but something caught her eye.
The office lights were all off. No one was inside. And, even better, one of the tie-dyed curtains was stirring gently in the breeze. Which meant that window was open.
She needed to get to Alexander, but this might be her best shot at the office. Wondering if Henry was creeping around somewhere beneath her, she grabbed the window ledge and hauled herself up. The window was an easy squeeze, and Theo slid down into the interior office without a sound.
It was dim, but her eyes had adjusted to the darkness outside. It looked like a regular old boring office. There was a frosted glass doorway leading out into the hall to the reception area, and a door to what was probably a closet next to a bookshelf with several books, none of which looked fun. There were a couple of chairs facing a desk. On the desk was a bulky telephone, but no computer. Which was just as well. Theo wasnât like Wil. She could use computers when she needed to, but they were boring and she had no idea how to do anything fancy or sneaky on them.
The desk had several drawers. Theo moved the desk chair aside and tugged on the top drawer. Locked. Then the next, and the next. All locked. One locked drawer she could understand. But all of them locked? They were definitely hiding something.
Theo crouched, pulling out the tools sheâd aggressively borrowed from the ceramics building. She assumed sheâd be a natural at lockpicking.
She assumed wrong. Five minutes later, she was still fiddling around, poking the interior of the lock hoping something happened. She wanted to scream, to throw the tools, to knock the desk over.
Instead, she closed her eyes and took some deep breaths. Remembered her father tinkering on his battle bots. Heâd spend hours doing the same basic task over and over, trying to figure out the best way to wire something. Or her mother, baking batch after batch of cookies with the tiniest of changes in ingredients, baking time, or temperature, all in search of the perfect combination.
And if Alexander were here, heâd advise her to be cautious, to take her time.
Theo could do this. She slowed down and paid attention to how the interior of the lock felt depending on how she moved her tools.
