A Chance to Compete

THE GIRLS SPENT THE LAST week of the school holidays with Leah, practising everything they had learned. Most days Leah gave Vicki and Kelly a lesson on their ponies, and both Dandy and Cameo had improved by leaps and bounds. Amanda sometimes joined them, but mostly rode around having fun with Charlie.

“You girls will have to enter an A&P Show,” Leah said proudly as she watched the ponies trotting around the paddock, working softly on the bit. “You look like professionals now!”

“Are they much like Ribbon Days?” Kelly asked.

“Yes, just bigger and more prestigious,” Leah explained.

“What classes do they have for horses?” Vicki asked.

“There are flat and hunter classes — the ponies jump over walls, brush and wire jumps around the outside of the ring. Like at Ribbon Days, but the jumps are much higher,” Leah explained. “Then often there will be show jumping and show hunter classes as well.”

“It all sounds really fun,” Vicki said. “That can be our aim — to compete at an A&P Show one day.”

“There’s local shows you can enter, then the top riders go down to Auckland to compete at the Royal Easter Show — I’ll be there show jumping with Showbiz this season.”

“I don’t know if we’ll ever be that good,” Kelly shrugged. “Cameo’s just a bush pony.”

“Never say never,” Leah said with a smile. “Growing up I never thought I’d be show jumping at this level, but look at Showbiz and me now. You’ll be amazed what you can achieve if you work hard for it.”
