There was one Sunday, and I was walking home from mass. I remember the time, too, when the undying friendship between Liam Mac Carráin (21) in Ireland and Arie Kuipers (34) in the Netherlands started. I was interested in Irish, and it was Liam Mac Maoláin (may God have mercy on his soul) from whom I got the actual address. Because Liam Mac Carráin didn’t have Esperanto, nor did I have Irish, we wrote our letters in English at the start. (And me not realising there might be a language more difficult for foreigners to learn than Latin or Greek!) Little by little, soon there were no words other than those in Esperanto and Irish! My true friend, I give thanks to you for your friendship and sympathy through days of joy and of sorrow. May God bless you, your relatives, and your beloved country!
