Chapter Eleven

Allison walked swiftly to her car. She had to get away from Connar for a while and try to figure things out. If she could have asked him about the sword, he might have been able to reassure her. But how could she bring it up? The way she’d discovered the weapon made it look like she’d been snooping through his things. Which was exactly what she’d been doing. Besides, even if he gave her a perfectly reasonable explanation for where he’d gotten the sword, could she believe him? Coupled with her inability to find out anything about Connar’s background on the internet, the sword set off all sorts of alarms.

Well, damn. All along, she’d thought Connar was too good to be true. Average, boring women like her didn’t attract stunningly handsome wealthy men, men who then fell instantly in love with them. It was a fairy tale, and now it looked like her Cinderella story might be about to come to the end.

But if Connar was a criminal or a con man, why was he with her? She had nothing he could steal, no trust fund or jewelry or anything of real value. And if he was a sexual predator, he hadn’t had to use much coercion to get what he wanted. Not to mention, she was certain sexual predators weren’t so tender and loving with their victims.

She hadn’t sensed anything kinky in all their bouts of lovemaking. And that’s what it had felt like—making love. Not hot sex. Not mindless getting-it-on. The real deal, the merging of their spirits as well as their souls.

“Sheesh, you are far gone, aren’t you?” Here she was waxing poetic about their physical relationship when only a minute before she’d suspected him of all sorts of horrible things.

But it was impossible not to be affected by such a sublime sexual experience. It had been incredible, beyond anything she could imagine. Thinking about it, she let out a long sigh. All she had to do was think about making love with Connar, and all her doubts went away.

They eased even more when she talked on the phone with Megan after arriving home. When she told her friend about the sword, Megan was unconcerned. “Maybe it’s an excellent reproduction. There are a handful of smiths in the country who do that kind of work. And the ornamentation is probably gold plate and green glass. And if even those are real emeralds, they’re probably not jewelry quality.”

“But what about the way it made me feel? I swear, I experienced this gut-punch of fear when I saw it.”

“Well, you did say the people in your first vision were carrying weapons. If that’s a memory of being attacked in another life, then your assailants were probably armed with swords. So swords are going to be a hot-button for you.”

“I suppose so,” Allison agreed. She wanted to believe what Megan was telling her. If she tried hard enough, and replaced her anxiety over the sword with memories of making love with Connar, she felt sure she could make the doubts go away.
