* * * *

Freddy was back in the city, and he hated it.

He’d lived there all his life, yet he missed Gillham, the pack and the forest. His mountain lion missed it too, and it wanted Freddy to go back. Instead, Freddy was in a darkened, smelly bar, sipping on a too-warm beer and waiting for his contact to get there after a Nix had shimmered him to his old apartment.

Yeah, it was early to have a beer, but what the hell. It wasn’t like Freddy was going to be in shape to drink one later that day.

He didn’t have a clue where his father might be, but someone had to know. Freddy didn’t believe for one second that the only thing his father had done since he’d escaped jail was trying to kill him. He was probably already neck deep in his old businesses again, and that meant someone had to know something.

His thoughts went to Caleb. Had he already noticed he was gone? Was he worried? Or did he think Freddy had stood him up, that he was an asshole?

Technically, he had. He’d left without telling his mate he was going, he hadn’t texted Caleb or called him. He also didn’t expect he’d ever go back to Gillham. He might be an idiot, but he wasn’t that stupid. His father had tried to kill him once, and now he was offering himself to him on a silver platter. The only way that was going to end was with his death.

At least Jordan and Caleb would be okay. That was the only reason Freddy was doing what Ryan had suggested he do. Oh, he knew Ryan had only been trying to get rid of him the night before, and Freddy would have ignored him if he hadn’t been right.

Caleb was too good for him, there was no doubt about that. But Freddy would do what he could to keep his mate safe, and that was what he was going to do. He didn’t care much that it would mean he’d die. He’d expected that to happen so many times over the years, he was surprised it hadn’t. Deals gone bad, or other drug dealers who wanted his clients. He’d always expected that to be his end. Instead, it would be his father, the man who had brought him into this world.

It was kind of ironic, really. Or was it sarcastic? Freddy wasn’t sure, and he didn’t care. It didn’t matter that he wasn’t as smart as Caleb. Not anymore.

Caleb would find someone else eventually. Freddy knew he’d be hurt, but it was best that he’d left only a few days after they’d met. That way they hadn’t gotten close yet, even though he could still feel Caleb’s lips on his from the night before. He’d treasure the memory, and hopefully, it would help him get through whatever torture his father had no doubt in mind for him.

“Freddy.”

Freddy turned his head to look at the man sitting next to him. “Clark.
