At some point in the future, perhaps when competitive pressures dictate 1 Gbps residential service offerings, cable operators can install fiber media to the home and use the same headend equipment that was previously used to provide service over coaxial cable. Replacing the CNU with an ONU, and using the identical provisioning as was used for the CNU, the new FTTH customer equipment is provisioned with the same service offering. Figure 4.32b demonstrates this transition from coaxial customer to fiber customer.
