Working Through It

The night they'd slept together had been the first time Lucas had gone for more than a couple hours without a nightmare. He'd told Nikeisha that after they'd woken up just before dawn. The air had been cold, the light gray, but they had just laid there, sometimes talking, sometimes not. He hadn't told her about the nightmares, not yet, but he had opened up a bit, enough for her to know that what had happened hadn't been the first time he'd had a violent awakening. She'd just been the only who'd been hurt, aside from him. He'd messed up his hands more than once hitting the wall or a lamp.

She'd been able to hear the pain in his voice as he'd brushed his knuckles across her bruised cheek. She'd tried to kiss away the pained look in his eyes and one thing had led to another, but even after they'd cum again, she'd still been able to tell that he blamed himself.

When they'd started back towards his place, she'd known they would need to make a decision. Would this be just a one-time thing – okay, technically two times – a heat of the moment kind of thing that they'd be awkward about for a while before things got back to normal? Or would they be making this into something more?

She'd know that they should talk, but she'd been unable to form the words. Instead, she'd reached over during that chilly walk back and had taken his hand, threading her fingers between his. He'd given her a surprised look, then pulled her closer. And that had been that. They'd decided to give things between them another shot.

Over the days that followed, Lucas slowly opened up about the years he'd been in the army. He told Nikeisha about his friends, Grant and Nathan, cousins from California and how they'd gone through basic together. Grant had been the younger of the two and when Lucas had been assigned to Grant's unit while Nathan was sent elsewhere, Nathan had made Lucas promise to look after Grant. One look at Lucas's face had told Nikeisha not to ask what had happened next. Instead, she let him turn the subject to some of the humorous things that had happened while he was stateside.

She wasn't a psychologist, but she knew enough to realize that Lucas was dealing with PTSD. It wasn't uncommon for soldiers to come home with post traumatic stress, and she knew he wouldn't lose his benefits if he admitted to having a problem, but Lucas was proud and refused all attempts to discuss counseling. The best she could hope for, she finally realized, was for her to coax him into talking and hope that by at least getting things out there, it would help.

They hadn't discussed their plans for Thanksgiving, but she wasn't surprised when he showed up at her place around noon with mashed potatoes and a store-bought pumpkin pie. The turkey breast she'd bought had been in the oven since early morning and the rolls were ready to slide in as well.
