Part 3

Anthony studied Andrea's perfectly proportioned form as she leaned over to pull out some papers from her briefcase. He couldn't help but gaze at the way her arm pushed one breast into the other as she rummaged, a strong look of determination on her face. She really seemed to have no idea how beautiful she was, but he wished that she did.

He found himself studying her left hand, hoping not to see any sign of a wedding ring. He didn't think that anyone willing to dedicate so much time to his office would have time for a healthy relationship – he certainly didn't – but you could never tell with these things. He was relieved when there was no sign of jewelry on either hand. She was a no-nonsense kind of girl. Her sharp intellect should have been a clue to that.

Finally she looked up at him and slid a thick folder across the desk at him.

“The people you hired are morons,” she stated matter-of-factly. He thought back to the floor 15 crowd and couldn't help but feel more agreement than defensiveness. He said nothing though, and just gazed at her, barely able to conceal his amusement. She didn't say anything else. Apparently that was her lead in to the conversation. He eventually inhaled before speaking.

“What makes you say that?” He considered saying her name, but it felt too forbidden. She was untouchable from here on out, and saying her name made him want to be closer to her.

The woman's deep brown eyes looked into him, as if gauging whether or not he could handle her answer. He smiled expectantly, and she took a deep breath, her voluptuous chest rising as she took in air. He forced himself not to notice.

“I know they don't think they're racist, but...”

“Oh no...” he instantly understood. The people on the Tyson Community Center team were the kinds of people he had spent his whole life socializing with on behalf of his father. People who would sit on their thrones of privilege and look down at the world, tsk-tsking how sad other people must have it and bragging about the small things they had done to help the needy. He had always hated how “the needy” were referred to as if they were a subspecies of human.

Andrea stopped talking, eager to see whether or not he actually understood. He was just as eager to show her that he did. For some reason, he found her undivided attention flattering.

“I completely trust your judgment on that,” he said carefully. He was worried about offending her, but he also had a business to run. This was an important project.

“It's because I'm black, isn't it?” she smiled, and said it teasingly, but there was a hardness in her eyes, measuring him. He wanted to meet her mark.

“I'll have someone do an evaluation of their work. How does that sound? We can weed out the ones who think they know what's going on and the ones who might actually move this project forward.
