Part 6

Clayton couldn't get the waitress out of his head. The way her face had looked, pained, lonely, seemed to stir him in a way he didn't know he could be stirred. Was she more like him than he realized? Was there even a woman on earth who might be able to understand him? He knew that they all liked him for his body, and liked him for his money, so he used them the same way he felt like they wanted to use him. It seemed only fair. And he got a lot of pleasure out of the deal.

He had gotten more pussy than any man he knew. He was a sweet talker, a real charmer. But it wasn't something that made him happy or feel proud of himself. That waitress, she seemed proud of herself. He could tell she had immense respect for who she was, and she was completely comfortable in her own skin. And her skin was sexy. Its caramel color, and her delicious curves, made his mouth water. He felt incredibly intimidated by her, because he wasn't used to being around women who actually respected themselves.

As a default he had become the type who didn't respect the women he slept with any more than he would respect someone in prison. They were just there to use as he wished. It satisfied his lustful cravings a lot of the time, because he had a huge sex drive and could think of little else sometimes, but it always felt cheap afterward and left him craving something deeper.

Maybe something deeper would never happen with the girls he normally took home or randomly took behind buildings or under the cover of trees. Maybe the only way he could get something deeper was by finding a woman he didn't resent. Maybe the waitress, who watched him wryly and stood her ground around all the men who wanted her body, was the kind of person who would be able to help him find more meaning in his life.

It seemed ridiculous, but he truly wanted something more. And if he got that, maybe he would be able to make her smile and wipe off that sad and lonely expression right from her face. That would give him more pleasure than fucking a million different Gingers combined.

The next day, he took a long drive by himself. He turned his phone off and ignored all the calls and texts from the girls vying for his attention. He hated being attractive sometimes, the sycophants never left him alone. All he wanted was some peace of mind, and the only way he would get that was without them around.

He found himself pulling into the diner at twilight. The sky was starting to grow pink and light blue with the sunset. He sat on the hood of his car, debating whether or not to go inside. The waitresses' jeep was parked outside, so he knew she was in there, but he wasn't sure what to say. Maybe it would be better if he said nothing at all and went home.
