Beehives on a stand

Providing Bees Access to Water

Honeybee colonies need water, and they do a great job of seeking out water sources. When planning hive placement, it is good to give some thought to where your bees may look for water. Bees can fly, so water does not need to be right next to the hive. Any clean water source within a quarter mile is okay.

Bees use water to thin honey for food and to cool the hive. Bees collect water year-round on warm days but they harvest much more during the summer heat. If you do not have a natural water source nearby, you should provide water. I have always been an avid plant lover. Before becoming a beekeeper, I built several small water gardens on my property. Now, my water gardens provide clean drinking water for my honeybees. The water source needs to have a shallow drinking area with pebbles or sand, otherwise some bees will drown. Provide a water source large enough to last for several days, even in hot weather. You do not want to have to fill it every day. When the weather is hot, bees can deplete a small water feature quickly. If you or your neighbor have a swimming pool, providing water becomes even more important. The water source should be closer to the beehives than your neighbors swimming pool. Once bees imprint on a water source, it is difficult to keep them away. It is a good plan to have a water source in place before your bees arrive.
