Chapter Nineteen

The school shut down for three days. Snow continued to fall through Tuesday and didn’t stop until mid-morning on Wednesday. Plows had been running nonstop since Tuesday, but the few owned by the city were no match for the amount of snowfall they got. Summer knew she should work on her book—she had nothing else to do—but by taking on the extra class, she’d already put herself in Charles’s good graces. As far as she was concerned, the job was already hers. Her last meeting with him had gone wonderfully, and he’d only asked about her book in parting. He was too busy worrying about finding a qualified replacement before the start of spring semester. So instead of researching for her book, she spent her time doing less productive things and worrying about her ever-dwindling supply of fresh fruits and vegetables.

The roads were in no shape to go out, and she wasn’t quite desperate enough to start opening her canned foods. As she finished off the last of her tropical fruit salad, she wished for something warm and full of carbs. She didn’t normally eat pasta, but on such a cold day, it sounded amazing. She spent the next fifteen minutes looking up recipes. Despite a number of great reviews, none of the dishes looked appealing. That is, until she stumbled onto a lasagna recipe. Her stomach rumbled. Why did she crave pasta? When the answer came to her, she gritted her teeth and set her phone down on the counter. She spent the rest of the afternoon updating her lesson plans to compensate for the two days lost.

Summer was antsy to get back to work. According to an email sent out by the school, the main roads were mostly clear by mid-Wednesday, but they couldn’t start school until the next morning when the plows had a chance to clear all of the back roads. They weren’t supposed to get any more snow, and if the weather reports were accurate, they were still going to experience near-summer temperatures the following week.

So finally, on Wednesday, Summer went out to buy groceries. It seemed like every other student and faculty member was out doing the same thing. The parking lot at the grocery store was overflowing with pedestrians pushing shopping carts. Inside, the store was even worse. Summer fought through a crowd to get to the fruit. No shipments had come in during the storm, so the remaining fruit was battered and overripe. She left the store without buying anything.

On Thursday, she had two graduate classes to teach, both of them in the early afternoon. She spent the majority of her morning replying to emails and helping students who came in during her office hours. A few of her new students came by, worried how the storm had affected their recent web project. They had two less in-class days to work on it, and some of them were in desperate need of help. Summer couldn’t help but wonder how Millie was progressing in her class.
