Chapter Seven

They continued on like that for just over a month, seeing each other almost every day. Within two weeks, Keilani had called Gemma her girlfriend, and Gemma had mentioned to her friends back in Minnesota that she’d met a girl that she could imagine herself falling in love with…

If only they had more time.

When the Kapena volcano erupted, Gemma got a call at three in the morning. She immediately rushed to get dressed and met her team at their base camp, a safe distance away from the base of the volcano.

“It’s an amazing thing to see,” Gemma’s coworker Karl said as they watched ash clouds climb into the air and fire spurt from the summit.

“This entire island, it really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Gemma said.

Karl regarded her with interest. “I know that look, and that voice. You met someone here, didn’t you?”

Gemma was about to protest, but Karl held up a hand to stop her. “I’ve seen a lot of young scientists come and go, Gem. You learn to see the signs.”

“I just don’t know,” Gemma said, her eyes transfixed on Kapena. “I think I might be in love with her, but it’s only been… shit, it’s been nearly two months. I’ll have to leave shortly after this, and things are just starting to get really good.”

Gemma bit back a snarky comment about how much Karl was not helping her make a decision. She instead mentioned that they had a job to do, and they recorded their observations as the more violent parts of the eruption began to end.

She wasn’t unlike Kapena, Gemma decided. Filled with a fiery passion and life, just waiting to express all she could be. The question was, how destructive would an event like that be to her and everyone around her?

Gemma didn’t get home from her expedition watching Kapena until late that night. She’d been texting Keilani while she worked, but she’d also taken a lot of time to herself to think about what she’d talked about with Karl. Would it really be possible for her to change everything about her life just to be with Keilani? She knew there was no way Keilani would leave Hawaii and the rest of her family, especially Anakoni and Iekika. Gemma didn’t have any family back in Minnesota; just some relatives out west. They might actually be easier to get to from Hawaii than back in Minnesota.

It was something that Gemma was scared to let herself consider. She knew she’d have to talk about it with Keilani, and what if she thought they were moving too fast? Gemma could get dumped on the spot, and all her planning
