EGON

Egon couldn’t quite believe his eyes.

This wasn’t just bad. It was fucking terrible.

It was nasty and vicious, and he didn’t really know how to react. Not that he would admit this to his brothers. He was the alpha, and no matter how much he relied on his brothers as doctor and Mayor, this was on him.

He had to figure this out.

He had to be the one to fix it.

“This is seriously messed up,” Valens repeated once again, kneeling by the body. “I’m not a vet, but I’d say that cause of death is likely exsanguination. See that big gash all through the gut? That would do it.”

“Okay, okay. Thanks. That’s enough,” Oz begged.

“You’re a shifter. You’ve killed animals before. Don’t be such a baby,” Valens snapped. There was no real malice there. He was just as freaked out and lashing out to keep his own emotions at bay.

Egon was about ready to do the same.

“Yeah, but when I kill animals, it’s to eat. This? This is just messed up.”

“The location can’t be a coincidence, either,” Egon said, rubbing a hand over his mouth.

“What do you mean?” Valens asked.

“This was supposed to be Bree’s cabin. In fact, she would’ve been staying here if I hadn’t insisted on keeping her in town.” He looked at the secluded cabin and clenched his jaw tightly. There was a scent in the air, but he didn’t recognize it. Whoever had done this was a newcomer to town. He would stake his reputation on it.

“Do you think this has something to do with that psycho ex of hers?” Oz asked.

“It’s gotta be, right?” Valens answered.

“It’s possible. It would make a lot of sense. We’ve never had something like this. I’ll ask Dad if he remembers something this bad in his days as alpha, but I kinda feel like we would know that.”

“No shit,” Oz grumbled. “How am I gonna tell the residents that this just happened days into the tourist season actually starting?”

Egon shook his head and knelt by the dead animal. The deer’s carcass would have to be moved and the entire surrounding area cleaned. Whoever had killed the deer hadn’t just slit open its stomach. They’d spread the guts around, and a gruesome message was spelled in the blood on the cabin door.

You’re next.

That was it.

Two small words that struck fear in his heart. Could this mean that someone was after his mate? It was the only logical explanation.

“At least we know this wasn’t Old Man Warner losing his shit on the wildlife again. There’s no way he would have written that creepy message,” Valens pointed out. “But I’ll track him down and check on him. See if he saw anything.”

“That’s actually helpful. Thanks, Valens. What about you, Oz? What do you think you could do to make sure word doesn’t get around up and down the mountain?”

“I’ll play the perfect politician, of course. No one will know.”

“We’re really lucky a deputy found this and that it wasn’t a tourist coming to stay at the cabin.
