Chapter Twenty

Gabe

I needed a drink to unwind. A lot of drinks. I needed to drown in them and forget every crack of my knuckles against that stranger’s flesh. So, even though I was bloody and about to be in a world of hurt as my adrenaline wore off, I showed up at the address Hells had texted me, looking for a distraction—anything to take my mind off the mangled man I’d left behind.

What I got when I walked in the door fueled the violence simmering in my veins back to a boil. Penelope motherfucking Shade, the last girl I needed to see after the night I’d had, being felt up by one of my boys. Her eyes were closed, her lips tipped into a content smile, snuggling against Kaz’s chest like he was her man.

It was bullshit. Utter bullshit.

No fucking way was this going to stand. My mind went blank, vision hazy, and when her eyes met mine, innocence spreading across her angelic features, I couldn’t hold myself back for another second.

I’d spent too long watching her walk around with her idiot boyfriend and hating every second of it, even if I’d never admit that to anyone—not even myself. That cycle was not about to repeat itself. Not when she was mine.

That thought seemed to come out of nowhere. Mine. But it hadn’t really come from nowhere, had it? It had been dormant in the back of my mind since the second I saw her years ago, and tonight, it had been reactivated on a nuclear level.

My fists gripped the back of Kaz’s shirt, yanking him away from Pen so hard he tumbled into the people behind him. They pushed him back to me, and my fist was waiting, slamming into his gut. He folded in half, clutching his middle, face burning bright red as he wheezed for breath. It was a bitch move, sucker punching him like that, but I didn’t have it in me to care. Not when he was touching Pen.

Penelope yelped my name and grabbed my shoulder, but I shrugged her off. I wasn’t done impressing upon Kaz how far he’d overstepped. I would deal with her later.

I grabbed the neck of his shirt, hauling him upright. Our chests bumped, and we were nose to nose. Anger mixed with confusion in his features as he breathed hard.

“I don’t know what the fuck you think you’re doing, but that girl is off-limits. You need to take your cheesy ass out of here before I get really crazy,” I seethed.

He shoved at me, but he didn’t raise a fist. “What’s wrong with you, man? I’m just dancing with her, not fucking her. She made it clear you weren’t together.”

“That’s because we’re not.” Pen swatted at my shoulders, barely hitting me. She probably could have packed a punch if she wanted to, but she was so fucking sweet, she didn’t even try to hurt me. “Let go of him, you psycho. Let go before I turn your balls into pancakes!”

Okay, not that sweet.
