Chapter 18

“WHERE THE HELL WERE you? I’ve been looking all over for you,” Megan said when I finally found her in one of the rooms. She was holding a bowl full of small pieces of paper.

The stain on my dress was more or less gone—I’d somehow managed to wash it out after Caden left—and I was glad that it was hot in here, so I wouldn’t have to worry about getting cold in my damp dress.

“What’s that?” I raised an eyebrow at her, pointing at the bowl.

“Oh, it’s for the dance competition. I’m supposed to do the draw.”

“What competition?” I wasn’t aware that there was going to be any kind of competition. “Here? At the party?”

“Yeah. It was mentioned on the other side of the invitation.”

“I didn’t see that. So what’s going to happen? How does that thing work?”

“Well, everyone who wants to participate has to write their name on a piece of paper, and then I’ll do the draw and everyone will have their pair.” She tilted her head. “Actually, everyone will have a partner only if I do the count right and make sure we have enough people. It’s just for fun. We can get some really unexpected pairings. People will cheer for every couple. You know how that goes. The loudest—”

“Yeah, people will decide who the winner is.”

“Do you want to participate?” She flashed me a smile. “Maybe you get to dance with some interesting guy or a girl.”

“Did Caden write his name on one of those?” I lowered my gaze to the papers in the bowl.

“Actually yeah, he did. Why?” She furrowed her brow.

I snatched the pen that was attached to the top of her dress and grabbed an empty piece of paper so I could write down my name. “You’re going to announce him as my partner.”

I dropped the paper into the bowl and returned the pen to her.

“What?” Megan gaped at me like a fish. “Wait, do you want me to cheat?”

“Yeah. Can you do it for me? Please.” I clasped my hands in front of me.

“Um, I guess. But why? What’s going on?”

“Nothing. I just have something in mind.” My plan was finally coming together.

I was going to drive Caden crazy with desire, and then I was going to figure out a way to get him to truly fall for me.

This dance was a step in the right direction, and I wasn’t going to let him mess it up or distract me.

“Okay.” Megan gave me a surprised glance. “But you’ll have to tell me what’s going on.”

“Sure, but not right now.” Actually, if my plan worked, everyone was going to know about it eventually.
