Choice of Flotation
Flotation holds a lot of weight when it comes to stability. The shape of the flotation and amount of its buoyancy will have a lot to do with your level of satisfaction when walking upon it. Flotation that is boxy in shape, such as black plastic dock floats made specifically for docks, have nearly uniform displacement from top to bottom. In contrast, cylindrical flotation that lays in water horizontally, such as round pontoons and barrels, do not have uniform displacement. Since the greater amount of displacement is found near the centerline of a barrel or pontoon, an abrupt tilt from shifting live loads on a dock may be experienced simply because the barrel must sink a bit before the better part of its displacement goes to work. Though barrels are an affordable way to float a dock, the shape does not lend itself to the best stability. They do, however, offer a great deal of buoyancy. Whether you use barrels or the dock floats, put enough into the job so that a lack of buoyancy is not the cause of instability.
