Metal ceiling panels can be inset into a recessed area, such as this coffered porch ceiling, to turn them into a focal point.

SAFETY FIRST

Taking down a tin ceiling is not terribly hard work because gravity is on your side. But the force that brings the ceiling down can also bring down decades of accumulated debris. There are really two main safety hazards when deconstructing the ceiling: sharp edges and airborne material. Because tin ceilings predated the widespread use of asbestos as an insulating material, it’s not a common concern when tearing out an original tin ceiling in a very old home. However, other material, including compacted dirt from the floors or attic above, and mold can create a lung-harming cloud. Always wear extremely tough work gloves and a thick, long-sleeve work shirt or jacket to avoid serious cuts from the edges of the tin panels. Wear a hat, respirator, and wraparound eye protection to ensure that the work doesn’t take an unexpected toll on you.
