Yam twist and ply. Traditional worsted fabrics generally have a two ply warp and a choice of single or two ply weft. Count limitations associated with worsted spinning permit the production of plain weave fabrics normally with a weight range of 160-200 gm2.

Further reductions in fabric weight require single ply warps, which in turn necessitates warp sizing prior to weaving. When considering the choice of yarn twist, an increase in twist factor will result in; increased crispness in the fabric handle (this is also associated with a reduced feeling of softness and a 'dryer' handle); cooler, denser, less hairy fabric (this is the basic principle employed in the production of 'Cool Wool'); improved resistance to pilling; and a small increase in yarn strength. Fabric sett ~ fabric weight. Fabric weight is determined by the combined effects of yarn count and the fabric sett expressed as warp and weft yarns per cm. Having selected the fabric weight range required, a consideration should be that an increase in fabric sett will: increase the stiffness and durability of the resultant fabric, and reduce the drape and flow of the resultant fabric.
