WHY BEETLES SHINE

Beetles are known for their shiny, colorful shells. There’s even a whole family called jewel beetles because they look like sparkly gemstones. Scientists have been studying them to see if bright colors help beetles find each other. One thing they’ve discovered is that the surface of a jewel beetle’s shell is made from a liquid crystal–like substance arranged in tiny pentagons, hexagons, and heptagons. This causes iridescence, in which colors shift depending on what angle you’re looking at them from. Other beetles have layered shells, or closely packed, tiny bowl-shaped dents that reflect light. Scientists aren’t sure yet what these kinds of shiny shells are used for, but think they might confuse predators. Either way, they’re pretty!
