Chapter 17

Paul was back at his father's house and sitting on the couch. He was thinking about how good it was to see Joyce.

Thinking of her, he remembered the envelope that the receptionist had given him before leaving Dr. People's office. He began searching his pockets, and once he found it, he opened it up. Inside was a card with his next appointment date. There was also a piece of folded paper in the envelope as well. Paul unfolded the paper, and to his surprise the name "Joyce Ware" was written on the first line.

As he scanned the paper, he realized that it was the blank piece of paper that Dr. Peoples had asked everyone in the session to write on, explaining what led them to seek her help, as well as what they wanted to achieve by going to see her.

Paul then began reading what Joyce had written, but he stopped after the first three lines because he felt a tug of guilt, knowing that these were her personal thoughts. But he pushed on, curiosity getting the best of him.

Joyce had described all the details that had happened between them, which he already knew. But what he needed to know was what she wanted by going to see Dr. Peoples, and that's what ripped his heart out. Joyce had written:
