WINTER

I look at myself in the mirror for the millionth time this morning. I feel completely out of depth with myself given that I don’t know who the girl is that’s staring back at me.

She looks put together in a way I know the real me isn’t. Right now, she looks different, and I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or bad.

The woman looking back at me in the mirror is dressed for success and she looks like she’s ready to take on anything and anyone who stands in her way.

The saying ‘fake it ‘til you make it’ has never been more accurate before than in this moment right now.

I opted for a business dress that ends a little above my knees, and I have on a pair of black, red bottom heels. My hair is in a bun with some tendrils hanging loose. Light makeup and red lips complete my look for today. Outwardly, I look like I should be on the cover of some magazine while on the inside I’m nervous and on the verge of freaking out.

I mean, who wouldn’t be nervous if they learned out of the blue that they were responsible for millions of people’s lives, right?

Today is going to be the first day where I make an appearance at Crowne Enterprises. I have no clue how this is going to go, but the determination to kick ass is prominent even if my brain is coming up with millions of reasons why this is going to be a bad idea.

I’ve already emailed Chase about setting up a press conference today, so I’ll have that to look forward to in addition to the other items on my list of things to do today.

Getting rid of all my thoughts, I try to focus on the positive. Once I’m finished getting dressed, I grab my stuff and walk down the stairs and into the kitchen to grab a cup of coffee before I’m ready to leave.

It’s only eight AM and I need to be there by nine, so I have time. Not that it really matters what time I get there since I’m the boss and all that, but setting an example on punctuality is a good start, right?

When I step into the kitchen, I see that my mother is already up and drinking her own coffee. She’s still dressed in her robe, which brings me to the assumption that she woke up specially for me.

I really could have gone the whole day without seeing her. It’s just what every girl wants to see before her big day—a mother who doesn’t give a shit.

“You look fat in that dress,” are the first words she says to me when I’m grabbing my coffee. I get the sudden urge to want to bash her head into the table or something. I continue ignoring her because I know she’s trying to get a rise out of me.

This isn’t the first time she’s made stupid comments about me, my weight, or even my appearance, if we’re being honest.
