CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

“No.” She slapped tears away. “This can’t be real. It just can’t be!”

He shrugged.

“Help me figure it out because I can’t think of why you’d do this. How can you be a serial killer, Mann?” She chuckled. “It’s so ridiculous that it’s almost funny.”

“I’m not a serial killer. The Sandman doesn’t exist. I played a part like in a movie or a play. At least that’s how I see it.”

“It was you who killed all those women. You killed Lauren Peele and stuck her in my house. Just like you killed Daphne Porter five years ago and stuck her in your own garage!”

“You’re missing the point, Lisa. The murders were a part of the bigger goal.”

“And what is the bigger goal?”

He walked to the foot of the bed. “I worked over thirty years with the Baltimore Police Department. Ever since I could crawl, I wanted to be a cop. It wasn’t a choice.” He pointed the gun to his chest. “It was destiny. It was fate. It’s what I am.” His eyes grew wide. “As long as there is an Adam Mann I will always be a cop.”

“Oh, God.” Lisa wiped a tear from her chin. “Don’t tell me you became the Sandman to help your career.”

“Ding!” He pulled an invisible string. “She is smart!” He turned in a circle. “Sam, tell Miss Swanson what she’s won!” He laughed.

“Wow.” She stared at the sheet. “I remember the first day we started working together when you kept talking about how the department was trying to push you out. How you’d prove your value no matter the cost. How you’d teach them that you couldn’t be thrown away like trash.” She exhaled. “I thought you meant you’d teach everyone by cracking a case. I didn’t know you meant you’d become a serial killer just to solve your own crimes and get the glory.”

“That’s pretty clever, huh?”

“I’d say ‘desperate.’”

“I say ‘clever.’” He pointed the gun to her. “It’s wiser than anything you young shits in the department these days could think of doing. I was the goddamn department. More loyal than any of you young fucks there now!” He kept the gun on her. “Including you.”

“People think of you as a legend, Mann.”

He smirked.

“Well, you’ll definitely be one now.” Pain shot through her hooked up arm. “Just not for the reason you think.”

“Do you think it’s fuckin’ fair how they treated me? I worked my ass off for that department and they thought I was too damn old!”

“No one said you were too old.” Lisa straightened her bound arm. “Even back then it was all in your head.”

“Bullshit! I heard them talking about me.” He waved the gun. “How they said I wasn’t as effective as I used to be.” He walked back to the cabinet. “How I was just in the way.”

“No one said any of those things, and I sure as hell didn’t! I was ecstatic to be your partner because of what a wonderful cop you are. I looked up to you! You were one of the best cops this department ever had.
