I’m so, so, sorry,” Zuri apologized, climbing off of her bed and heading over to the window seal, where Amionette was seated. She’d been gazing off into the sky since they got settled, and she worried that Amionette was upset with her.

“I’m literally going to scream if you apologize again,” Amionette told her and took her by the hands. “Zuri, and I don’t mean this in a mean way, but I think I got other shit to worry about than you burning my hands. I’m more concerned about the why…”

“Really? I would think you’d be more concerned about what happened with Syncere…” Zuri smirked and tilted her head, her long braids hanging over her shoulder.

Amionette rolled her eyes and looked back out the window. She wasn’t even sure how she felt in that moment. She was mad that he rejected her, and publicly at that. Amionette was angry at herself for clearly giving Syncere too much attention, when she knew she wasn’t ready for whatever might happen between them anyway. This was her fault, she felt, like everything else in her life, so she would just have to take this on the chin like everything else.

“I can’t worry about a nigga who ain’t worried about me,” Amionette laughed and shook her head, but Zuri could feel the confused turmoil swirling around in Amionette, much like her own feelings about herself. “Now, don’t deflect. What happened in the bathroom? What really happened?” Amionette turned to face Zuri and waited for her response, but Zuri didn’t have any words that could encompass what she’d experienced. Not just in the bathroom, but when she’d seen things…. Felt things from Syncere’s perspective. Zuri knew trying to explain it would be a task in itself, and it wasn’t something she was ready to open up about just yet. Not like that anyway.

Zuri took a seat beside Amionette and shook her head. “I want to tell you, but I also want to figure things out first. Daddy said he wanted to talk to me and Sacred tomorrow, and I have no clue what it’s about. But it sounded serious. But honestly, before I have a talk with him, I want to speak with his “colleague.”

“That fine man who came out of the bathroom with your dad? And what was that even about? Tonight has been wild,” Amionette laughed, leaning her back against the window.

Zuri cut her eyes at her friend, feigning a laugh. “Girl, please. I wouldn’t say fine, but he was handsome for an older gentleman. It’s some shit in the game, and I don’t know what the game is, but I intend to find out.”

“Is this about the bathroom, or…” Amionette asked, she figured there was something more to her friend’s curiosity.

“The bathroom, and… he saw something that only I saw. I need to know what it was, and I have a feeling… No, I know that he can help me figure things out,” Zuri admitted.
