After struggling out of the swamp with the rest of his patrol, PFC Sterling Mace was exhausted, soaked to the skin, and demoralized. But when he got back to the battalion bivouac area and saw PFC Seymour Levy waiting for him, Mace’s demeanor changed in a split second.

The kid looked pale and tired, but under the bandages that swathed the lower half of his face, Mace could tell that Levy was grinning as widely as his mangled chin allowed.

“What in the hell are you doing back here?” Mace demanded. “I thought you’d be halfway to the States by now.”

“I sneaked off the hospital ship and bummed a ride back to the beach on a ferry,” Levy mumbled around the gauze. “I just wanted to be back with you guys. It’s where I belong.”

“Jesus, Sy, you must be nuts,” Mace said, but he couldn’t keep from grinning, too.
