THE ROYAL CASTLE WAS quiet now that King Alfred’s forces had marched out. The shouts and laughter and sounds of heady excitement had slowly filtered away and no longer invaded the tower room that had been Princess Allora’s prison for so many months.

Allora stood at one of the large windows and watched the last of her father’s army leave the castle grounds. Leading the procession of men had been a tall, commanding figure with hair the color of a summer sweetnut, brown and streaked with strands of sunlight, and a body fit and honed for battle.

She whispered Canton’s name, feeling her heart clench at the thought of never seeing him alive again. She had lived through her unjust imprisonment, each day praying he would learn the truth. How, though, would he learn the truth if he was dead? He would never know he was leading his men to war for a lie, and that the king he swore loyalty to, planned his death.

She touched the warm glass of the windowpane, and a sigh escaped her lips. She didn’t see the beauty in her face that Canton had told her was there. The slightly tilted eyes, a light blue in color and framed with thick white-blond lashes, didn’t look all that extraordinary. Her thick blonde hair was braided, showing high cheekbones, emphasizing her full lips. She touched them, remembering the kiss Canton had bestowed there during one of their last meetings. Her first kiss, and it appeared it was destined to be her last. Which was no more than her father intended, she knew.

His cruel words that morning haunted her still, the pain in her soul a reminder of the cruelty of men.

Dirty Winged Clans. Their women tempt and tease and drive a man mad with desire, never realizing they can never hope to hold their faithless hearts, he had raged as he stood over her. I will rid this world of them, Allora, just as I fought to rid you of your deformity, the poison in your heart. I have failed with you as I did with your mother, but I will not fail again. They will all die!

Allora battled the tears rising behind her closed eyes and, not for the first time, prayed for a miracle. Surely, the gods that protected them all would send one to save them now.

“How could it have come to this?” she whispered as her fingers touched the reflection of the tears shimmering in her eyes.

“We knew it would come to this, Princess.” The gentle voice of her maid reminded Allora that she was not alone. “It was only a matter of time, as you have always been aware.”

Mary had been her mother’s maid. After Demetria’s death and the appearance of Allora’s deformity, Mary had been brought to her. Allora knew her father would kill the maid as well. He would not want to leave a witness to the fact that he had murdered his child.

“It’s insanity,” Allora whispered. “The workings of a crazed mind.
