Chapter 14

The hotel sat near the waterfront with harbor views, but Iain hesitated. “Werewolves own the bar opposite,” he said when they pulled up in the foyer.

“Fae own the hotel,” Fergus stated. “The witches have assured you of your safety unless you leave the hotel. Why don’t you enjoy a few days of peace? Use the time to make plans and decide where you’re going to live.”

A growl rippled through Iain, escaping before he could tamp it down. He hated acting on the defensive even though every word Fergus uttered made sense.

Elspeth gripped his hand, her touch soothing his angsty wolf. “We’ll stay and make plans. If we require longer, we can fly to Waiheke or Great Barrier for privacy.”

“Yeah, it’s easy enough to rent a secluded cottage. Paranormals live on the islands, but I’ve never seen a wolf during my visits,” Fergus said, his nod telling Iain he approved of the suggestion.

Iain tensed before issuing a warning that hurt him mentally. “My father holds a mean grudge. You and your family should take extra care with security.” By binding with Elspeth, he’d put himself and Elspeth directly in his father’s sights. “Don’t underestimate his rage.”

“We won’t,” Fergus said. “Dragons, like other paranormal species, are used to living quietly and blending. Your father will stick to the unwritten promise not to attract humans’ attention. Now, cease your worrying and get to the honeymoon.” He paused and grimaced comically. “I wish I hadn’t mentioned that. No one wants to imagine their sister’s sex life.”

Iain laughed even as he scanned the foyer. Apart from three uniformed porters and their boss, theirs was the sole vehicle on the forecourt. Iain climbed out and reached for Elspeth’s hand. She slid across the seat, her legs long and sleek beneath the dress the witches had given her as a wedding gift. The silky fabric slid down, screening Iain’s view.

Fergus groaned and slapped his hand over his eyes. “Enough, already.”

Elspeth’s laughter rang out. “Hang on. Let me grab my handbag.” She leaned back into the car just as a faint whistle caught Iain’s attention. A moment later, shock struck as he realized someone had fired a gun at them. One of the new silenced weapons that cost big bucks on the black market. His pack had those weapons because he’d shot one himself in tests at their private firing range.

“Stay down. Fergus, that was a bullet. What are you doing?”

“I’m ringing the police,” Fergus said in a grim voice. “The bullet pierced the wall. They’ll be able to recover it for evidence. The new silencer guns will get their attention. Yes, I’d like to report a shooting at the Huntington Hotel.”

Iain opened his mouth to stop Fergus and took half a step toward the dragon, but the man stood his ground, even as he calmly ran through the shooting details.

“We need to get inside and out of sight,” Elspeth snapped. “Iain, Fergus is right to report the crime.”

Habit made Iain want to object again, but the instinct was his security training.
