Come A Little Closer
Amya drove, but Grace couldnât stop her leg from bouncing up and down on the floor of the car. Kit sat pleasantly quiet in the back, but Grace didnât want her to see how nervous she was. Amya, clearly, knew it before Grace could even say the words. She kept sending Grace sharp looks and shaking her head, essentially telling her to stop whatever it was.
Graceâs mind was a jumble, torn between home life and work life. She really rather would have preferred to be at work, digging deeper into her case and possibly signing out an unmarked vehicle to go check out Second Street again to see if Lexi randomly showed up.
It was the day after Christmas, but it was warmer than it had been the evening before, which was a plus because that meant more people would be out and about rather than hiding away in a house or apartment or somewhere. It meant she had a much better chance of finding Lexi. There had been no signs of Aaron. Gloria had called earlier that morning, and Grace had to tell her there were no advances on his case since the purchase at the gun shop.
Gloria had only reconfirmed the fact the gun purchase was not hers. Grace had seen the video footage finally. Aaron had walked inâshoelessâand purchased a gun. She was surprised the owner had even sold it to him, and she would be checking on the processes he implemented because he shouldnât have in Aaronâs state. That was a problem for another day.
Amya had driven with Kit to the station, picked her up, and dragged her to the DCFS office. Their meeting with Doreen had loomed over her head for the better part of the last few days. She hated not knowing what was going on, but at the same time, she was far too scared to even look and see for herself.
âCut it out,â Amya muttered under her breath before shooting a look into the rearview mirror at Kit.
âWhat?â Grace asked, her leg finally stilling, and her hands clenching instead. She shifted in her seat, her badge digging into her hip at an awkward angle so it hurt. Grunting, Grace tried to move it back to where it was but was unable to and only succeeded in popping her badge off her waist band and watching it slide unceremoniously between the seat and the center console. âShit.â
âLanguage.â
Grumbling, Grace tried to shove her hand down between the two and successfully grab her badge. She was unable to reach it, but Kit, from the back, leaned forward and under the seat, handing it over. Grace sent her a thankful smile and took it. âThanks, kid.â
âWhy do you call me that?â Kitâs voice echoed in the small confined vehicle.
Grace froze before she could get the badge back on to her hip. She was still twisted around and could see Kitâs face as she sat behind Amya. âDo you not like it?â
Kit shrugged and repeated, âWhy do you call me that?â
âHabit? I dunno.
