Thistle, a Bramble-class gunboat launched in 1898. The four Bramble-class gunboats launched at the turn of the twentieth century marked the final evolution of the Victorian gunboat, and differed from all previous classes in that they had a steel hull and, as can be seen here, no yards or sails. Thistle’s main armament of two 4-inch quick-firers, which was supplemented by four 12-pdrs, is also clearly visible in this photograph. Despite their more modern appearance, the Bramble class performed the same role on distant stations as did their sail-and-steam predecessors, both before and after the First World War. Thistle herself was not sold off until 1926, at the same time as her sister Dwarf.(© The National Archives, United Kingdom, ADM 176/705)
