“Come on,” Kelsey said, taking David’s gloved hand.

He looked even more uncertain than he had at dinner.

Of course, most people did when they entered the abandoned amusement park.

Or it could be left over from dinner. Something had been bugging him since they brought the hamburgers in.

And she bet it had something to do with his brother--whatever Neil had said to him before they ate was serious, and it obviously shook him up.

Maybe family stuff? If that was it, then he needed an escape.

And if she knew how to do anything, it was escaping the bullshit from time to time.

So, she took him to one of her favorite places in the city--well, on the outskirts of Liverly, anyway. One of those places where they could go--even in the cold--and see the stars, and think and--

“We’re going to get arrested,” David grumbled as he walked away from the car.

“Just trust me.” She rolled her eyes and inhaled a deep breath of the cold air. Even now the wind hadn’t picked up--everything was unusually still. The stars twinkled overhead, well, when the clouds didn’t block them, anyway. Nonetheless, despite the cold, there was something about this place that made her feel good.

It didn’t matter David thought she was nuts—which was obvious from his hesitance when they first pulled into the deserted gravel parking lot.

“The police have a lot more they need to be doing than checking out run-down amusement parks.” She crossed the ten yards to the bent chain link fence and pushed it up to make room.

“Actually, checking run-down, supposedly deserted amusement parks is exactly what they’re supposed to be doing.”

“Oh, come on, this is the coolest place.” She ducked under the fence, careful to not get her stocking cap caught, and entered the remnants of the carnival. “So dark and spooky and depressed, I just love it here.”

The fencing crackled as he slipped through the opening. “Should I be scared?”

“Of what? This place?” She gestured to the deserted grounds that were supposed to be off-limits. “Never. It’s dead. No one comes here.”

“I mean of you.”

She laughed. “Come on, let me show you around.” They crossed the semi-snow-covered field toward the nearest building. Piles of rolled-up tents laid haphazard along the ground, mostly covered in snow, with little parts of the once white and blue, or white and red tent fabrics peaked out.

“Where are we?” David asked.

“Liverly Amusement Park, the same place we were a few minutes ago.” She handed him one of the small flashlights she’d grabbed from her car and panned it over the buildings.

“No, I mean, what part? I don’t remember this field.”

“Oh, this is where they’d have all the special stuff. Remember the area they had fixed up like an old-school carnival with tents and stuff?”

He glanced around. “Is that what those lumps are? The old tents?”

“Yeah. We’re basically on the backside of the park.” She waved her flashlight like a beacon, hitting a couple of ice-covered poles sticking out of the ground. “Those are the permanent tent poles.
