Chapter Eleven

With a quick glare, Lina set Erelis’ peaceful demeanor on fire, and Lucia was starting to wonder if they would ever mend that bridge. But you know what? It wasn’t Lucia’s job to fix it for them.

The scribe cleared his throat.

“I’m glad you’re both here. Well, glad as I can be with the murderous stare I’m currently receiving,” he said, scratching his head.

“There’s nothing I can do about my fiancee’s glare, Erelis. You wounded her heart, and you’ll just have to continue squirming under her fierce gaze until such a time as she feels reparations have been made,” Lucia said, eyeing the pages.

He shifted his weight to lean against the check-in desk.

“And. . . when will those reparations be made, exactly, Lina?” he asked her directly. Lucia gave him one point for that courage and then quickly subtracted it for such a foolish question.

A woman’s heart is hers alone to wield, after all.

“You being unsure of a deadline for my wrath to end is part of the punishment, you two-timing conman,” Lucia’s fiancee said, leaning her head on the innkeeper’s shoulder.

Lucia tried her best not to twitch. After all, it only made sense for Lina’s gestures of affection to continue as they approached and advanced through marriage. So, she needed to learn to allow herself to appreciate them.

Erelis sighed and nodded.

“Well. . . did you two pick a wedding date? I know we’re in a tight window here,” he said.

“Tomorrow,” Lucia said.

“At sunset,” Lina added, surprising the crystal elf. It’s not that she was opposed to a sunset wedding. She just didn’t know the rynari had a specific time chosen. But maybe it was part of her culture or a specific detail of this ceremony the innkeeper wasn’t aware of.

The scribe looked down at his papers and then handed them to the ladies before him.

“Okay then. We’ll need to get your papers moving through the bureaucracy. I went ahead and drew up the documents for you each to sign. There’s a crown notice of unification, an application for a marriage license, an affidavit for the joining of private finances, and a few other things. Normally, this stuff would take at least a few weeks to move through the system. But I’ve got some friends who work in various crown positions who promised to have this all stamped and official by tomorrow morning. My wedding present to you both,” Erelis said, looking pleased with himself. “I just need these filled out by tonight. I’ll come back by around 7 p.m. to collect them.”

Lucia raised an eyebrow as she took the stack of papers. They would have to hustle to fill all this out and sign the necessary documents before then. And seeing to the customers on top of that was a challenge.

Just think of it as part of the challenge to keep the Flying Filly, Lucia thought to herself.

The rynari grabbed a few of the parchments and read through them. With this being a moment her scornful gaze was aimed in a different direction, Erelis gave the brides-to-be a quick bow and retreated from the inn.
