Chapter 8

Rebekah tried to turn her face away from the noxious scent, but it followed her no matter where she turned her head. A deep voice crooned in her ear as a gentle hand patted hers. Light came and went with shutter-like speed as her eyelids fluttered.

“Rebekah,” the voice came again, this time accompanied by a kiss to her brow.

A face came in and out of focus. She couldn’t make out who it was, but the white-blond hair was unmistakable. “Zeus?”

“That’s the way, sweetheart. Wake up.”

A figure next to Zeus’ right captured her attention. Aramis?

“What happened?”

“You fainted.” Zeus tucked her hair behind her ear, grazing the side of her face with his thumb.

She tried to sit up, but he made her stay put. “Why did I faint?”

Aramis took a place next to her on the sofa, scooting her legs over. “I suppose it was either what you didn’t want me to disturb upstairs, or it had to do with the epidemic reported by the other brewers.”

She pointed her finger in an imitation of a gun. “That’s the one.”

“I thought maybe it was.”

Aramis patted her legs in a companionable way. Zeus had pulled up the oversized chair close to her. His hand lazily brushed through her hair. It was a delicious sensation that lulled her into a slumberous state, regardless of Aramis’ disturbing news.

“Why didn’t you tell me, Rebekah? I had to figure it out when other brewers came to the Council for answers.” Aramis was clearly disturbed by her lack of trust.

“Well, I did kind of hint at it. But it’s kind of embarrassing for a brewer of my level to admit they have a problem even getting the simplest of potions to concoct.”

“Part of the solution is admitting you have a problem,” Aramis quipped.

Zeus leaned forward. His face pulled into a severe frown. “You can help her, can’t you?”

Aramis scratched at his highly groomed beard. “That all depends.”

Rebekah shot up on the sofa. “On what?”

“On what kind of contagion this is and how it’s contracted and spread. We need an origin to combat the problem.”

“That sounds much too sensible. Much to Normal for me.” Rebekah let herself fall back down onto the cushions. However, Aramis had a point. Until they knew the origin of the problem, they had no way to fight it. “What do the archives tell us? My great aunt Hester had this same problem when she reached my age. What if it’s genetic?”

“Then your great aunt got around,” Aramis joked. He shook his head then. “This isn’t a genetic problem, unless it preys on a certain recessive gene found primarily in brewers.”

“And the Council? Are they stepping up to help the Guild?”

“How can we not? We depend so much on the talents of the brewers. A strike at the brewers is a strike against the entire Witching community.”

Zeus kept his protective arm around her. He’d grown quiet. That was disturbing in no small measure. She’d much rather him act his normal cocky self than showing signs of being a deep thinker.
