The Siren plunked down heavily next to me on the rocky shore. I didn’t look at him as he said “Thinking of returning Below for Daddy, little Princess?”

I rolled my eyes, not wanting him to know just how close he was to the truth. Instead, I chose the safer of the two options I’d been considering earlier. “No, I was wondering how to get my dumbass brother to believe me about the Sirens in the school not being sent by your creep of a mother.”

Caspian chuckled, “And how’s that going for you?”

“Wonderfully, thank you. I have a foolproof plan.”

Out of the corner of my eye I saw Caspian raise an eyebrow at the obvious lie.

Sighing, I turned to him. My heart fluttered slightly at the softness in his face. The lightness there. No, Zaniah. He is a fucking bullshark. Not for kissing.

My traitorous eyes dropped to his lips anyway as he said “Foolproof, eh? Want to enlighten me on this incredible plan?” He smirked at where my eyes had traveled, and turned to look out at the water and the rapidly disappearing light. Fucker.

“No thank you. I don’t plan on revealing any of my plans to you.”

Again that eyebrow twitched up, but he said nothing. It was strange, he seemed almost peaceful tonight. Perhaps our brief afternoon away from each other had softened some of his hard edges. Seeming to notice me openly staring at him, he turned to me and said coyly “Something you’d like to say, Princess?”

I swallowed. There were quite a few things I wanted to say to him. Starting with ‘fuck you.’

Instead, I decided to see what this unexpected calm in the storm that was Caspian meant.

“You seem… different tonight. Less… douchey.”

“Ha! Only for you, Zan. Only you would notice that.” He paused, thinking for a moment. My eyes trailed down the side of his face, lingering on his strong jaw and the thick cords of his neck. Gods, why was this stupid, arrogant Siren so fucking sexy? Chill, Zan.

Finally, Caspian said “I guess I’m feeling fairly relaxed tonight. After all, a good fuck can do that for you,” he offered me a wink. I internally cringed. Disgusting murderer. I couldn’t let myself forget that. He continued, “so I guess you are witnessing the rarely seen pleasure that is a well-fed Siren. Though I’m not too relaxed that I couldn’t go for a quickie.” He wiggled his eyebrows at me.

“Ugh, your heart is blacker than squid ink, Caspian. I can’t believe you’re bringing up that poor Mer you killed right now.” Just like that, the soft glow that had settled over Caspian in my mind’s eye disappeared. I stood up, preparing to storm off, but a strong hand grabbed my wrist. I paused, turning to look down at him.

“Let me go, Caspian. I don’t want to deal with your arrogance right now.” He flinched slightly at the malice in my voice, but said softly “don’t go, Zan.”

What the fuck? Why did he sound almost like he wanted me here? Like he wanted this alone time with me? No, I couldn’t read too much into this.
